The best gifts are the things you’ve always wanted have never considered buying for yourself.

Of course, this only carries the pressure over to the gift giver, now tasked with finding just the right item without your firsthand input. This difficulty rings particularly true in the case of watches, the best of which are perfectly tailored to the lifestyles of their owners.

In this list, Lucerne’s Emerson Yao lends a hand by sharing with us his recommendations for the best watches to give  to five distinct types of women.

The lady who power lunches

What she needs: This woman is always on the go, an expert at balancing the demands of her life both inside and outside the boardroom. She needs a watch that she can trust to keep up with her, one that won’t take even a second away from her to-do list.

What you should get her: A Patek Philippe annual calendar or perpetual calendar (pictured) watch, a Breguet Queen of Naples, or a Rolex President

The young woman fresh out of college

What she needs: Finishing college is a significant milestone in her life, and her watch must signify both her calm confidence and her eagerness to keep moving forward. It must be practical and simple—with a date, and preferably housed in a steel case—but it also ought to be versatile and stylish in design. As Yao points out, “It can also double as her first working watch.”

What you should get her: The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Ladies (pictured), or an Omega Aqua Terra Ladies

The discerning jet setter

What she needs: Every female is constantly wearing multiple hats—that of mother, friend, sister, working woman, the list goes on—but this woman always seems to be in two places at once, seamlessly integrating her many roles into her fast-paced lifestlye. She needs a watch that can keep her grounded, even as she boards the next red eye flight.

What you should get her: The Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Duo (which has twin faces each side showing a separate time zone. Pictured), or a Patek Philippe world time watch (which shows all the major cities and all 24 time zones, a very rare feature seen in ladies watches)

The woman who puts the men at the gym to shame

What she needs: “Strong is the new skinny” is this woman’s mantra. Always looking to push the limits of her fitness, she needs a performance-oriented watch that doubles as her fail-safe workout buddy.

What you should get her: A Suunto, Garmin, Applewatch, or Soleus, for which functions like GPS, heart rate monitor, water protection, and chronographs are basic staples

The astute traditionalist

What she needs: This is a no-frills kind of woman, the sort that adores the timeless and disregards the trends. To match her lifestyle, she’ll need a watch that will be as appealing to her in four decades as it is when she first lays eyes on it.

What you should get her: A Vacheron Constantin Patrimony (pictured), a Patek Philippe Calatrava, or Breguet Classic
